Enrollment Information
At Grosse Pointe Nursery School, we are excited to welcome new families into our school community. Enrollment for the upcoming school year begins during our annual open enrollment period each February. After open enrollment, we continue to accept enrollments on a rolling basis as space is available.
-
Applications are accepted only after open enrollment begins. Registration is completed in person only and begins at 9:00 a.m. on the first day of open enrollment.
Enrollment placement is determined on a first-come, first-served basis according to the order that completed registration forms are received. Each registration packet is reviewed individually in person, so families should expect the process to take time.
After the open enrollment period, we continue to accept applications and enroll families on a rolling basis as space becomes available. Families interested in enrolling after open enrollment are encouraged to contact the school to inquire about current availability.
To help ensure the best experience, we recommend scheduling a tour approximately one month before open enrollment so families can become familiar with our school before registration day.
-
A tour is the best way to experience Grosse Pointe Nursery School and see our classrooms and learning environment. Since our teachers are actively engaged with students during the school day, tours are focused on viewing the building and learning more about our program rather than meeting classroom staff.
Tours are available by appointment and are the only opportunity to see the school facility before enrollment.
-
Children may begin enrollment once they are 2½ years old, as space allows. We work with families to determine appropriate placement based on age and classroom availability. Children may be able to begin after turning 2½ during the school year (for example, as late as January), depending on available openings.
Classroom placement is determined by our staff based on each child's age and developmental needs. Families do not select their child's classroom placement.
Enrollment is not guaranteed until placement has been confirmed.
-
A $100 non-refundable registration fee is required at the time of enrollment.
Families enrolling multiple children receive a 10% sibling discount per child.
An additional one-time $50 insurance fee is assessed on the March invoice.
For current tuition rates and payment information, please visit our Tuition & Fees page.
-
Once enrollment is confirmed, families will need to complete required school forms before their child begins.
-
If a classroom reaches capacity, families may be added to the waitlist for the current school year.
Waitlists apply only to the current school year.
Waitlists reset each February when open enrollment begins for the following school year.
Placement from the waitlist is based on available openings.
FAQs
What ages does GPNS serve?
1
GPNS serves preschool-aged children, including children beginning at 2½ years old, through Pre-Kindergarten. The school also offers a Junior Camp for children who have completed Kindergarten through age 10.
What are GPNS school hours?
2
During the school year, Grosse Pointe Nursery School is open Monday through Friday from 7:30 AM to 5:30 PM. Children may arrive beginning at 7:30 AM, but all children are required to arrive by 8:30 AM. Half-day hours are 7:30 AM to 12:20 PM.
What should my child wear to school?
3
Children should wear comfortable, washable clothing appropriate for active play and the weather. GPNS requires tennis shoes; dress shoes, fashion boots, sandals, and open-back clogs are not permitted. Families should also keep an extra change of clothes in their child's backpack.
What should my child bring to school?
4
Children should bring a backpack, lunch, weather-appropriate clothing, and an extra change of clothes. Children in extended care should also bring a child-sized blanket in a zippered pillowcase and a small washable comfort item for rest time. All belongings should be clearly labeled with the child's name.
What are the meal, snack, and rest-time routines at GPNS?
5
GPNS provides a morning and afternoon snack following Child and Adult Care Food Program guidelines. Milk and water are served with snacks, with juice offered occasionally. Families provide their child’s lunch. Lunches are not refrigerated, so please pack a cold pack for items that need to stay chilled. Families should also notify the school office of any food allergies so appropriate accommodations can be made.
Children enrolled in extended care have a daily rest period from 1:00–2:45 PM and are expected to rest for at least 45 minutes. Children who do not fall asleep are provided with quiet activities.
Can I change my child’s schedule after enrollment?
6
Yes. Schedule changes may be made during the school year if space is available. Requests must be made through the school office using a Schedule Change Request form. Families may also occasionally add an extra day with advance notice, subject to availability.
Please note that regular attendance days cannot be switched due to an absence.
What happens if my child becomes sick, is injured, or has an emergency at school?
7
If your child becomes ill at school, parents will be contacted and asked to pick them up. While waiting, your child will be comfortably cared for and supervised in a separate area.
If your child has an accident, injury, or incident at school, you will receive written notification. Any injury involving the head will also result in a phone call to the parents.
If emergency medical care is needed, parents will be notified immediately. If a parent cannot be reached or immediate medical attention is required, your child will be taken to the emergency room designated on their Child Information Record.
How does GPNS support and monitor my child’s development?
8
GPNS is committed to helping every child grow and succeed. At the beginning of each school year, families complete two Ages and Stages Questionnaires (ASQs), which help teachers and families understand each child’s development and identify areas where additional support may be helpful.
Our staff receive ongoing training to support children with a variety of developmental and behavioral needs, with inclusion always being our goal. When a child’s needs are beyond what our program can safely and effectively provide, we work with families to identify appropriate community resources.
Parent-teacher conferences are held in January and June to discuss your child’s development, progress, and assessment information.
